Continental Lint Cleaning plant, Swansea SC
Cotton (lint) must be separated (ginned) from its seeds, dirt and plant stems before it can become one’s tighty-whiteys. The cotton gin, invented in 1793 by Eli Whitney, does this mechanically and revolutionized the cotton industry…along with contributing to Southern slavery and ultimately the U.S. Civil War.
Daniel Pratt formed his company in 1833 to manufacture lint cleaning machines, cotton gins. Through a series of mergers it became the Continental Lint Cleaning Company in 1899 and with additional mergers a world-wide force in cotton processing when, in 1986, the Continental Eagle Company was formed.
